Senior Adult Programs
Quality care with dignity, respect and compassion
South Oaks Hospital’s Senior Adult Program provides highly specialized inpatient psychiatric care to adults 65 years of age and older in a safe and private facility. Treatments are provided to senior adults who suffer from acute mood, memory and/or behavioral disorders such as depression, psychosis, anxiety disorders, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or post traumatic stress.
For senior adults who are affected by coexisting disorders – a combination of mental illness(es) and addictive disorder(s) – South Oaks also offers Chemical Dependency and Substance Abuse Programs.
Treatments in the Senior Adult Program begin with a comprehensive assessment, including psychiatric, physical and psychosocial components. An individualized treatment plan is developed based on each patient’s unique needs and assessment. Discharge planning, which begins at admission, is performed in collaboration with patients and their families to assure a safe return to the community, to a loved-one’s home, or placement within a suitable senior care facility.
Our approach centers on the collaboration of a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals – each with the expertise and special training necessary to effectively treat senior adults. The team includes board certified psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, licensed social workers, therapists and dedicated aides.
The team works with patients and their families to stabilize mood and behavior, enhance coping skills, reduce stress, facilitate cognitive change, manage medication, and provide new insights and positive reinforcement. The goals of the Senior Adult Program include successful recovery of our patients and return to their maximum level of functioning.
Our Senior Adult Program utilizes advanced intervention techniques and evidence-based treatments through psychotherapeutic and pharmacological means, such as:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Therapeutic Rehabilitation
- Arts Psychotherapy
- Exercise Physiology
- Occupational Therapy
- Physical Therapy
- Speech Therapy
- One-on-One Sessions
- Family Sessions
- Specialized Support Groups
- Medication Management and Education
We offer support for patients’ families through counseling sessions. These sessions offer information on diagnoses, coping skills, education and availability of in-home services, as well as the caring, comfort and support each family needs.
During treatment in the Senior Adult Program, patients have access to specialized quality services including 24-hour nursing care, assistance with personal care and hygiene, on-site pharmacy and medication review, nutritional screenings by licensed dietitians, and pastoral care. We also have licensed providers on site to monitor the medical needs of our patients.
If patients need emergency medical assistance during their treatment at South Oaks, transportation will be provided to one of our local hospitals for immediate care.
Visiting hours for patients in the Senior Adult Program are daily from 1:30pm–3:00pm and 6:30pm–7:30pm.
